Traveling or Flying with your Standard Poodles

Above - Royal Standard Poodles - traveling Carlo is being picked up by his owner in Maryland.

This page last updated 4/6/10.

Traveling/Flying your pet in this day and age is not difficult. Reading or printing off this page will help you know what to plan and expect.

Please set aside time to read through this page several times having a dictionary at hand if necessary, or call me to help you get through it; 218-894-1434. Don't hesitate to contact me with questions!

The sections below contain:

1. Cargo information

2. Carry-on info

3. Over-all for 1. Cargo or 2. Carry-on

4. Guest room for traveling customers

5. Driving for/with your pet

1. Cargo

  • Standard Poodles - Pups fly in USA starting at 8 weeks of age.
  • Flying health certificate and crate (for 8 wk old pup) are paid for in your purchase price. Older pups I split the crate cost as they grow so fast a larger more expensive crate is needed (start at $36 and up).
  • Customers in warmer states need to know that "some" airlines cut off flying animals in cargo when the temps reach over 85 degrees coming into the summer months. If you are from a warmer state planning to fly a pup cargo, consider the cooler months or traveling with your pet as "Carry-on." If not, Continental Airlines can fly pups to warmer states!

Watch the news for your Standard Poodles Flying Weather.

  • With Minnesota winters, pups are not allowed to fly in cargo at 10 degrees or lower on Northwest Airlines (others may be temperature controlled such as Continental Airlines), so there are windows of temperature flying time-frames that customers should be aware of with each carrier during specific seasons. We work closely on this when the traveling time comes.
  • MSP (Minneapolis, St. Paul airport) is where I fly the pups out of, so when they ask, you need to provide "MSP airport" is the --shipping from-- location.
  • You "generally" need to contact airlines at least 10 days prior to known ship date and set up the flying data at which you pay for upon the pets arrival to you. I will be emailing 2 weeks prior to the date to remind you. Yet, please mark your calendar way ahead of time when you know they should be flying out. Call now to drill yourself on what is to go on :-)
  • Contact your airline carrier and locate where the cargo pets come into that you can drill ahead of time its location and be there when the pup arrives.
  • Crate size at 8 weeks of age is 26"L x 17"W x 18"H. As they age, they grow rapidly and crate size then grows with their weight, be aware the cost rises more to fly with size.
  • You, the customer, then inform me of flight plans/itinerary, I call airlines to validate the given data, and then I must arrive several hours ahead of time for the airlines.

    2. Carry-on

Below is Royal Standard Poodles - Hilo with his owner traveling with him as Carry-on to New Mexico.

    NOTES for Carry-on:

  • I let everyone know the flying dates for the standard poodles litter at which if you plan to carry-on your pup you should contact your airlines of choice (see a list below) to find out their rules. Some airlines only allow so many pets to fly as carry-on and in cargo (say 4 animals) at one time. So it is important you know what their rules are.
  • Customer will pay a flight carry-on ticket fee for their pup.
  • Embassy Suites is my recommendation if you want to stay the night before. It is just a mile down the road from NW/Delta cargo and by the Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP) airport. In using the Embassy, I can easily give you and your pup a ride to the airport several miles away, assuring all goes well for your flight back.

    Embassy Suites 1-800-embassy

What I provide with the purchase of your flying standard poodles:

  • Carry-on tote and health certificate are paid for in the price of your pup.
  • Customer will receive pup with the above style carry-on (may vary).
  • Carry-on traveling dimensions are around (these are somewhat squishable dimensions due to the flexible material for placing under seat) 10" Wide x 9" High x 18" Long. Once flight is in the air you are allowed to place carrier on your lap at which the ends unzip and you can pet and comfort your pup.
  • 4 puppy pads are provided, a washcloth, and 2 pair of rubber gloves.
  • Small bag of DVP food and chew bone
  • Toy with lots of smells from home :-)

What customer needs to bring for their standard poodles:

  • Water and food container
  • Leash
  • Towel
  • Small harness/saddle as in the picture below due to the fact they have not learned to follow with a collar. The harness allows you to easily lift the puppy's body if you have a layover and need to help him potty outside during traveling.

    3. Over-all for 1. Cargo -or- 2. Carry-on

    1. All flights are arranged and paid for by the new owner. I provide information here to help you along the way. This gives the customer knowledge to what their Standard Poodles must go through to fly as well as surety in knowing what airline choice is made and their rules.

  • When pups are born, I will email the "8 weeks" later flying your pet date for customers to know the day I will travel with the pups to fly them out. This is going to be DURING the week so plan accordingly. Airlines do not "generally" fly weekends as easily as during the week.
  • 4/26/09 - "Generally" I use Delta Airlines - - as they do their best to provide direct flight service. You may call either 1-800-692-2746 Delta Pet cargo portal service number or 1-888-736-3738 Delta Airlines and ask for help in setting up your flight plans.
  • Continental Airlines is my choice during the summer months. They have a controlled cargo temperature, always ask to verify!
Call now to drill yourself on what is to go on :-)
  • MSP (Minneapolis, St. Paul airport) is where I fly the pups out of, so when they ask, you need to provide "MSP airport" is the --shipping from-- location.
  • Crate size vss price: at 8 wks of age it generally costs a customer around $250 to fly their pup. As puppies grow, by 3 - 4 months of age they have now grown into a "Large" crate size 36"L x 26"H x 24"W costing around $400 (Alaska $620).
  • It is a 3 hour drive (6 hr round trip) for me so I ask everyone to coordinate dates with me that I may fly many at the same time. I will provide the initial date. If I have to ship your pup at a separate date than the others for your convenience, there will be a mileage charge of $100 . If a pup will need it's next vaccination during that time, it will be an additional expense please, besides a potential wait of another week to allow him to overcome any side effects.
  • In evaluating the best time to fly the pups; I have found now that EARLY mornings work in shipping them all out. Why? There is a pet/animal ban on flying Northwest/Delta if temperatures are above 85 degrees. The temperature to warm states does not rise until afternoon. In shipping them at the earliest day-time hours, we beat the heat :-) Don't worry about me having to get the pups to the cargo area at 5am to catch your 7am flight out--NO PROBLEM. I will do what needs to be done for the health of the pup and to get your new family member to you without as much stress as possible. This is when the cargo area opens in the morning (5am) and the pups must be there 2 hours prior to flying out. It seems to work great for me as the pups sleep the early morning hours away as we drive :-)
  • I use a dog's mother pheromone spray (fragrance of the nursing mother) just before they leave to help relax them as I don't believe in drugging them. Customers say they arrive just great at their end.
  • It is a new age in the pet flying world today, feel comfortable in knowing that your pup is being taken care of on the trip.
  • 2. In the USA; an out state buyer from Minnesota in deciding to move forward with a purchase and flying their pet, must keep in good communication that we can know what is to happen and when. I pay the flying health certificate needed to be done within 10 days of your Standard Poodles flying.

    3. Delta Airlines is the flyer of preference for your pet as they do their best to find a direct flight to a major airport in your area. You may choose any carrier you desire though.

    4. Overseas buyers; please thoroughly research who your transporter will be in understanding their requirements, notifying me then that I will know what is needed in shipping your pet. Example: How old must the pet be to fly to your country?

    5. Note: Delta airlines allows pets 10#s and under to fly with the owner in flight. Other airlines share 15#'s.

  • Our large Royals range "generally" at 8 weeks of age 10-15#'s.

  • Airlines will only fly pets/pups at 8 weeks of age. If you are considering flying "with" your new pup, check with me on pups weight!

Delta Airlines Cargo Generally a straight flight. try 1-888-692-4738 to book reservations (2/7/10)

Continental Airlines Generally a stop before final destination, yet all Continental Airlines facilities are climate controlled for pets!
